How can I tell if my browser uses 128-bit encryption?

By checking the browser encryption strength in both IE and Netscape, you can determine which encryption your browser uses.

To check your browser's encryption strength, perform the following steps:

Mozilla Firefox

On a secure website, double-click on the padlock in the status bar.

Firefox Padlock

Locate the text describing the connection encryption. If it reads 128-bit encryption, then your browser uses 128-bit encryption. If it reads 256-bit encryption, then your browser uses even stronger encryption.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

From the Help menu, click About Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer: Help > About Internet Explorer

Locate the Cipher Strength. If it reads 128-bit, then your browser uses 128-bit encryption. If the Cipher Strength reads either 40-bit or 56-bit, you have the option of upgrading your browser to a cipher strength of 128-bit.
